After months of trading barbs, U.S. President Donald Trump met Colombian President Gustavo Petro at the White House on Tuesday (February 3).
The closed-door talks in Washington lasted around two hours, with no media present and no major agreements announced — but both leaders had warm words for each other.
"We got along very well. He and I weren't exactly the best of friends, but I was insulted because I never met him. I didn't know him at all. And we got along very well. And now we are. We're working on that."
Some analysts and advisers had questioned whether the two would get along given their monthslong hostility, and that they represent radically different ideologies.
Trump had called Petro an “illegal drug leader,” though he provided no evidence, and Petro, a former anti-imperialist guerrilla, has called U.S. operations in Latin America “war crimes.”
Petro was invited to Washington after a January phone call they both described positively, in a surprise thaw of relations.
And while on Tuesday, neither leader clearly said they reached any concrete agreement...
Petro said the meeting was one of shared values:
"The impression I have from a recent meeting just a few hours ago is positive. First and foremost, that is the reality."
"Looking at the photos of the presidents of the United States, Lincoln, was there in the picture: Freedom. We can be very different civilizationally speaking, historically speaking. But what unites us is freedom. And that is where the conversation began."
Trump also told reporters the two leaders were working on sanctions, without elaborating.
Petro is under US sanctions for alleged but unproven links to the drug trade, which he denies.
President Trump’s border czar says federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota will be scaled back after state and local officials agreed to cooperate by turning over arrested immigrants.
Tom Homan says about 700 federal agents—roughly a quarter of those currently deployed—will be withdrawn from operations in the state. He previously said reductions would only come if local authorities cooperated with federal immigration efforts.
The move follows recent signals from President Trump suggesting a willingness to ease tensions in Minneapolis and St. Paul.
A federal judge in Oregon has temporarily restricted U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers from using tear gas and other chemical munitions against peaceful protesters in Portland.
The 14-day order follows incidents at the ICE facility where demonstrators and journalists, including elderly participants, were reportedly targeted with chemical agents.
U.S. District Judge Michael Simon said the restrictions are meant to protect First Amendment rights, allowing the use of force only in situations where deadly force is justified.
The temporary limitation stems from a lawsuit filed by the ACLU of Oregon, which argued that the use of tear gas against peaceful demonstrators violated constitutional protections.
The brothers of Renee Good, one of two U.S. citizens killed in Minneapolis during federal immigration operations, called on Congress to take action on Tuesday to address violence related to immigration enforcement.
Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot and killed on January 7. Her brothers spoke at a hearing held by Democratic lawmakers, describing the loss of their sister as a turning point for communities affected by federal enforcement.
During the hearing, other citizens also shared experiences of what they described as unfair treatment by Homeland Security officers. The family emphasized the need for changes in use-of-force policies to prevent further tragedies.
The United States and Mexico have reached a new agreement on cross-border water deliveries, requiring Mexico to send at least 350,000 acre-feet of water annually to the U.S. during the current five-year cycle.
The deal comes after President Donald Trump had warned of possible tariffs on Mexican imports if water deliveries did not increase, citing concerns for Texas farmers.
The agreement is designed to stabilize water supplies, though some Mexican farmers, especially in drought-affected northern regions, say it could strain their own water resources.
Federal immigration officials are scouting and purchasing warehouses across the country to expand detention and processing space. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) says the sites would be properly designed detention centers, not simple warehouses.
The agency says it is reviewing potential locations to meet increasing enforcement demands, but some cities and states are pushing back. Local leaders in multiple states have said they were not notified of the plans and have limited power to block federal projects.
The moves come amid rising protests and legal challenges in several cities, as ICE works to expand its detention capacity to handle growing numbers of immigration cases.
Federal prosecutors are asking a judge to impose a life sentence on Ryan Routh, the man convicted of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump.
Routh is scheduled to appear Wednesday in federal court in Fort Pierce, Florida. Authorities say he aimed a rifle through shrubbery while Trump was playing golf at his West Palm Beach country club in 2024.
Routh’s attorney is requesting a lighter sentence, arguing that his client should have the opportunity to experience freedom again rather than spending the rest of his life in prison.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he planned to call American journalist and television host Savannah Guthrie following the disappearance of her 84-year-old mother.
"I'm going to call her later on. I think it's a terrible thing," Trump told reporters during a bill signing in the Oval Office. "I always got along very good with Savannah. (It's a) very unusual situation, but we're going to find out."
He also supported the idea of increasing the number of federal agents involved in the case, which is being led by the Pima County Sheriff's Department.
Savannah Guthrie, a co-anchor on NBC's "Today" show, will no longer host the 2026 Winter Olympics opening ceremony coverage, NBC News reported on Tuesday.
Investigators believe the 84-year-old mother of U.S. journalist and television host Savannah Guthrie was abducted, a local sheriff in Arizona said on Tuesday (February 3), after she vanished from her home near Tucson and was reported missing over the weekend.
"We do believe that Nancy was taken from her home against her will, and that's where we're at," Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said at a news conference.
Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her home on Saturday night (January 31), when she was visited by her children, and was reported missing on Sunday afternoon (February 1). She has limited mobility and could not have left her home unaided, Nanos told a press conference on Monday (February 2), when he said her disappearance was being treated as a crime.
Savannah Guthrie did not appear in her usual seat on NBC's "Today" show on Monday morning, which broadcasts from New York City.
On Tuesday, she posted a message on Instagram asking for prayers for her mother.
"Bring her home," the post ended.
