A judge on Wednesday signed off on a settlement between the IRS and hundreds of tea party groups, in what all sides agreed was a case of unwarranted and illegal targeting for political purposes.

The Washington Times reports the IRS agreed to pay $3.5 million to groups that were unfairly targeted for closer, time-consuming inspections.

The IRS also insists it’s made changes so that political targeting can’t occur in the future.

It’s still not known if former IRS senior executive Lois Lerner will be allowed to shield her deposition explaining her behavior, and whether the IRS should pay attorney fees.

Half of the money will go to lawyers and the other half to more than 100 tea party groups. Judge Michael R. Barrett called the settlement “fair, reasonable and adequate.”
